From Homeschooling to ALS Journey

Last year, was one of the major transitions for JC and Eu-La.  I decided to enroll them in the Alternative Learning System.  This is a curriculum of Department of Education for students to access education in a nonformal set-up.  We home-schooled our four children without adopting a curriculum from a DepEd-accredited school.  Enrolling in ALS is an opportunity for them to have LRN also.  This is basically a student number given by DepEd to all students who go to schools with their accreditation.

This one-year journey has given me answers and shown that my children can adapt to a classroom set-up as well.  Their teachers expressed how they are amazed with them, their special capabilities and how well they excel as compared to other students.

One thing that amazes me is their ability to commute from home to school and vice versa.  They were most of the time at home before then.  They go out of the house with us using a private car.  This period taught them to ride jeepneys and somewhat experience a jeepney detour, but was able to figure out how not to get lost.

Along the way, it was not as smooth as it can be, especially for JC, who needs learning considerations because of his special conditions.  One of the reasons why we homeschool from the beginning. Yet, with encouragement and assistance, JC was able to make it through his ALS.

They finished ALS Elementary this August 7, 2023.  Up until now we are still undecided whether to enroll them in a regular school or let them wait again for another ALS Journey and have them finished highschool.

As for the two younger children we are also preparing them to go to ALS.  There is an age requirement for this before you can get accepted.  For elementary level, at least 12 years of age.
